Having decided to most of the scenarios in Complete Fondler for Sharpes Practice I realised I would need about 30 Riflemen.
I wanted Perry's as I love them, but wanted a few more to flesh out the force.
I bought Eagle, Foundry, Front Rank, Offensive and Perry Bros. Other firms were considerd but dismissed as either not viable or not fitting in with the Perry 'Look', Alban for instance are gorgeous looking but don't mix at all with Perry.

The photo's show a perry plastic at each end for reference.

So what's what?

Foundry go quite well with Perry, but are too short in the leg- raising them up on their base will cure this. Foundry has limited poses though.
Eagle just aren't good enough quality.
Front Rank are larger the Perry and have ridiculously short rifles. Some of the figures will be usable. There is enough of a range to just use Front Rank, good casts and nice figures in their own right.
Offensive don't fit with any of the above, closer to Alban in heft, they also have stupidly short arms.
Perry Bros- slightly larger than their plastics range, with some added Foundry, Front Rank and Perry Plastic the unit should look indvidual enough.

I'm starting out on a Viking/DA Saga type game, haven't decided on rules etc but it will involve some fantasy elements and will involve adventures and battles with between 5-80 warriors a side. Time setting will be a mythical 600-1100 AD. A Jabberwocky will be in evidence. As will lot's and lots of snow. First up are the cavalry for Lord Skegg O'Ness, his faction takes warriors to Hell, anyone killed by his army will not go to Valhalla. Sven & Erik (the Heroes of The Sage) annoy Skeg.

Figures are a combo of-
Conquest Games Norman Knights (available from lots of places), not a bad first set of plastics. Horse and riders have limited poses though.
Mantic Games Zombies and Ghouls, bish bosh Frank's the man.
Gripping Beast's Viking and Saxon sets. Look better in the flesh than on various websites.

Picture shows the initial deployment of DBA sized elements but using C&C rules.
The Celtiberi got creamed, bad dice rolls and outrageous bad luck saw them get annihilated. The Warrior Bands didn't inflict one casualty.
I played Celtiberian.

The End Of Basing

Yet again I've changed my mind on basing for 'Command & Colo(u)rs' (click the link to get the game rules for free).

I've decided (definitely for sure this time) on 60mm front and 30-40mm depth for infantry/cavalry, with a few more deeper bases when I feel the need.
The pics show the different units, I'm going for 4-5 figures for Heavy Infantry, 3-4 figures for Medium Infantry, 2-3 figures for Light Infantry (skirmishing types) and 3-4 figures for Auxilia/Warrior (Auxilia is a gaming term and not meant as an historical reference)

Captain Nemo's Naval Brigade

Captain Nemo's Naval Brigade, made up of Brigade and Copplestone RCW Navy figures.
As they're for my VSF games I removed all the bolt actions on the rifles so as give them more of a Victorian feeling. I went for a simple design on the neckpiece as the unit will no doubt be used as Prussian, Austrian etc and any other country that needs naval figures (except the Glorious Royal Navy as I'll be using The Perry Boys range).

I've changed my mind again on the basing for C&C. How much time must wargamers waste on the whole basing issue?
Anyway I'm going for 12cm frontage with 6cm depth for infantry and 8cm for cavalry. Figure ratios will be about 10 for heavy infantry down to 4-6 for light bowmen. The size and ratio also works out really well for Impetus. If you've never tried Impetus you can download a free lite-version called Basic Impetus from Dadi & Piombo.

The pic shows some test bases for the basing, I did find nearly enough figures for a Spartan and Greek army in a drawer so C&C Expansion 1 is on the cards.

Seeing The Light

Having realised that there is only one Froth God AND HE IS MADE OF LEAD. I have binned the idea of using 1/72 plastics. I have seen the light brother and now I'm re-infused with metal love.
I will be scaling up the game board, possibly using Hexon tiles.
The picture shows a test run of my new basing and figure ratio (Foundry Spartans). The bases will be coloured according to the troop type. The figure ratio will be 1-1 with the game, so each game piece in the game will be replaced with a nicely painted figure.
First up will be the Republic Roman Army, I'm using Aventine figures, and very nice they look as well.
Making the ratio 1--1 has obviously reduced the price, the Roman army should cost about £100 (roughly 100 figures), visually it should look fine, somewhere between DBA and Impetus.
The main benefit of this is that'll I'll be able to finish armies, it also means I'll be able to have a lot more armies- just going through my lead pile I've enough figures for a Spartan, Greek, Theban Greek and Macedonian Army.
I'm already toying with converting the rules to suit an Assyrian-Egyptian-Sea Peoples-Babylonian etc style game, as well as an Arthurain-Viking-Saxon etc, the size of the armies makes it all doable.

Scaling Up C&C

C&C has really hit the magic spot, so much so that I've decided to scale it up to a 6x4 table.
Above are some Caesar 1/72 Celts I'll be using as Warrior Infantry.
The base size I've decided on will be 60x40mm with four base's to an infantry unit, as per the game. I did toy with having a big multi-base affair but I really want to be able to remove casualties quickly and easily and have the relative strengths easily identifiable.
At the rear are some slinger base's, I'm going with less figures per base for lighter troops.

Scaling up the gameboard has proven a bit more difficult than I first thought.
First up I drew a small section of hexes - these actually turned out to be too narrow, as I'd forgotten that hexes have a longer and shorter median. Luckily I found this out as I was just going to draw 120mm hexes over a terrain mat.
To get the bases to fit (they need more width than depth) I'm going to use a stretched hex style (imagine a honeycomb stretched widthways) and actually not draw the hexes on at all but draw a mark in the exact centre of where the hex would be.
So they'll be 117black dots on a 6x4 game cloth, the explanation sounds a lot more complicated than the actual process.
The game will now have a new and improved measuring system of dots.
I'll also be on the lookout for a terrain matt.

C&C Ancients

Dipped Nemo's navy figures twice with Klear, just have to matt them now.

And I've just got Commands & Colors Ancients, I also got a few packs of 1/72 figs to see if they'll fit in with my 'vision'.

Minden Hungarian Infantry

30man battalion of Minden Hungarian infantry.
The battalion is very non-specific as I wanted the 'feel' of a Hungarian regt rather than an exact copy.
My games will be taking place with both real and made up countries so the 'feel' is more important than how many buttons regt 'x' had in 1765.
No flags as yet as I can't decide on exactly how I want them to look, GMB are in the running though.
I've gone for 5 men on a 60x20mm base and 6 bases to a battalion.
The bases are metal from Precision Wargames Supplies and rather ace they are too.
I haven't decided on rules but I know I do want to be able to manoeuvre my battalion;-)

The close-up shows two different whites, the left figure has been highlighted with Vallejo White, while the the right figure was highlighted with Winsor & Newtons Griffin Alkyd Titanium White, (an oil paint that is dry in 24 hours)
